Lewes
Lewes, one of a series of historic towns which commanded parts of Sussex, is a very attractive town both to live in or to visit. Dominated by the remains of a medieval castle, its main street runs gradually down hill to the River Ouse, which dramatically flooded the lower streets in the winter of 2000. There is a museum for the castle, and another in Anne of Cleeves House; there are many other ancient buildings to enjoy exploring, and, with few of the usual chain stores and multiples, shopping is a special pleasure.
Lewes is specially famed for its Bonfire Night celebrations. It is the County town for East Sussex, and home of the county council.
